With over 1100 exhibitors and three days of educational sessions, the nearly 27,000 attendees at Greenbuild 2009 had a lot to digest in Phoenix. My immediate impression is that the Green Building industry has passed that nascent stage of development and is now in the midst of full blown commercialization. The trade show floor is now heavily weighted with large scale Fortune 500 companies that include both traditional building materials/service companies and non traditional companies looking for market entry points.
With this type of commercialization, the journalists covering the show had been wary of "green washing" but it seems their concerns have been mitigated by valid green products. Click here to read GreenBiz.com's review: SEARCHING FOR GREEN WASHING AT GREENBUILD.
The conference clearly illustrated the momentum of the green building movement. This momentum, however, is more preparatory due to the slowdown in building and the lack of funding for new projects. In my discussions throughout the conference, it seems that there was a general sense of establishing market position in anticipation for work volume to increase. It will be interesting to watch how this "waiting" process coupled with the entry of large scale corporations affects the survival of the smaller concerns in the market.
